David Charlesworth – Chair

David has always had a close interest in music making in Crediton Church. He has been a very occasional member of the choir and sung in productions of the Epiphany Pageant and Amahl and the Night Visitors, as well as in concerts given there by local choirs. He is a member of Exeter Philharmonic Choir and Exeter Bach Choir. English church music is very much a core passion for him.

Andrew Millington – Vice Chair

Andrew Millington was Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral 1999-2015 having held previous posts at Gloucester and Guildford Cathedrals. On his arrival in Devon, he quickly became aware of the excellent musical tradition at Crediton church with its fine choir and organ. He is heartened by the current standard of music at Crediton in the very capable hands of Jon Rawles, the latest in a succession of talented and committed Directors of Music.

Pete Francis – Secretary

Pete has lived in Exeter since 2003, and has taken an active part in local choral music for much of that time. He sings regularly with the Exeter Philharmonic Choir and the Torbay Singers, and has also sung occasionally with other local choirs, including Antiphon and the Heritage Singers. Pete also combines singing with his love of theatre. He has performed on several occasions with Staircase Opera, and also appears regularly on stage with the St. David’s Players, Exeter Little Theatre Company, Exeter Musical Society and the Cathedral Players. Coming to music relatively late in life, Pete wishes he had started singing at a younger age, and having sung at Crediton Church several times recently he is keen to take a closer interest in music-making there, helping singers of all ages to enhance their skills and experience.

David Jaques – Treasurer

David was born in South-East England and moved to Devon in 1976. In 1980 he set up the accountancy practice in Crediton that has since evolved into Wortham Jaques Chartered Accountants, conveniently located above Grape & Grain Wine Merchants in the High Street. David discovered at an early age that he has no singing talent whatsoever, and his only practical musical experience is a short spell as a bugler in the Boys’ Brigade. Nonetheless he has long been a music lover, and since joining the congregation at Holy Cross he has been delighted to discover what an amazingly talented choir we have here in Crediton. He therefore feels privileged to support them by acting as treasurer of the Crediton Church Music Endowment Fund, helping to ensure that our musical tradition continues to hit all the right notes—even if he is not the one singing them!

The Revd Preb. Matthew Tregenza – Chaplain

Matthew is the current Rector at Crediton Parish Church and has been co-opted as chaplain to the Fund.

Michael Graham

Michael Graham is a conductor, tenor and organist based in Devon, and serves as Director of Chapel Music at the University of Exeter, where he leads the University Chapel Choir and oversees a broad programme of liturgical and concert music. He is deeply committed to sustaining and developing the Anglican choral tradition and is delighted to support the work of Crediton Church Music Endowment Fund in this historic setting. Michael is particularly keen to encourage stronger links between parish church music and the tertiary education sector, helping to nurture the next generation of church musicians.

Laura Conyngham

Laura was born in West Dulwich, London in 1951 and has lived in Crediton for 36 years. Having sung with choral societies during school, university and adulthood, she has been in the church choir now for a couple of years. She’s looking forward to encourage confidence and enjoyment in music, to the young people of the area.

Martin Donnevert

Martin was born in 1959 in Fulda, the burial place of St Boniface in Germany. He moved to Crediton in October 1995 and has lived here ever since. Martin has been involved in choral singing both in Germany and England since his school days and in 2008 he joined the Crediton Parish Church Choir.

Jo Ward

Jo developed a love of music at an early age and singing had been a major part of his life ever since. He is particularly keen on encouraging young people to sing. He loves to see the youngest children develop their confidence and music making skills, which they take with them through their lives. The music foundation is just one way of helping people to enjoy music as Jo has over so many years.

Tina Guthrie

After graduating from Bristol University in 1982 with a Music degree, that specialised in Flute performance and early French opera, Tina went on to complete a PGCE in Cambridge and spent many years teaching in the Midlands. Tina moved to Devon with her family in 2002, where she has continued to teach until retiring in 2023. Alongside the teaching, she was and still is an active soprano soloist, orchestral flautist, sings with a number of local choirs and in September 2024 has taken of the musical director role of the Chagford Singers.

Gordon Pike

Gordon has spent 50 years educating and encouraging children to be involved with all kinds of music. In October 2020 he was awarded the Certificate of Special Service in recognition of his lifetime’s commitment to church music in Exeter and the South West of England. As a retired lay vicar of Exeter Cathedral Choir, he now also has the privilege to serve as a trustee of the Exeter Cathedral Music Foundation Trust.

Jonathan Rawles

Born in Bristol, Jon gained a choral scholarship at St Mary, Redcliffe and then went on to study musicology at the university of Durham. He studied for his post-graduate diploma in piano accompaniment at Canterbury. Jon was appointed Director of Music at Holy Cross, Crediton in December 2021.
